Wear Your Eyeglasses
Politicians and those who live their lives in front of others want to look their best. It is not just vanity that would lead one to do what is necessary to look good. Appearances matter. A public person’s image affects the level of influence one can exert as it relates to both pathos and ethos.
One way in which you should NOT attempt to enhance your appearance is to refrain from wearing your eyeglasses. That is what Culture Minister Rhodri Glyn Thomas did recently and it resulted in just the opposite of what he desired.
Minister Thomas had been chosen to announce the winner of the Wales Book of the Year ceremony. He wasn’t wearing his glasses and on live television he announced the wrong winner. Only after Tom Bullough was shown walking up to the stage at the Hilton in Cardiff to receive first prize and £10,000 for his novel The Claude Glass, about a friendship between two neighbors did Cultural Minister Thomas realize he had read the wrong name. The real winner was Dannie Abse for his book The Presence, about his 50 years of marriage.
So learn from Minister Thomas — WEAR YOUR GLASSES!
