We All Love Video Games

May 16, 2008

Last week I was in a meeting with a group of leaders from some of Texas’ largest churches to discuss issues we share due to similar size. Before the two days were out one of the men had mentioned at least four or five times how much he likes video games. Each time he would say this there would be someone new that would speak up to talk about their interest in video games. Before the forum was over it became obvious that we all loved video games.

As a teenager I plugged plenty of quarters into the video game machines in the back of the 7-11. The selection of games was limited (Astroids, Space Invaders, Pac Man, etc), and … well, I had to mow lots of lawns to pay for my video game addiction.

Things are very different now. On the internet you can find more free online games than you could play in a lifetime. Jokeroo.com has more than 1000 games available for free. My son, Parker, has links from his blog to 178 different games that he likes to play (maybe I should take a more active role in parenting). A huge percentage of the games he links to are at Jokeroo. There are action games, fighting games, puzzle games, kids games, multiplayer games, shooting games, racing games, sporting games, strategy games and more.

Parker walked into my study about an hour ago while I was playing one of their games, Mouse Under Seige, and he said, “That is a violent game,” in a tone of voice that said he thought he might have to take a more active role in supervising me. The game that he and I like to play is called Random Defence. It is in the strategy game section. Strategy…? Hmmm. Yes, I guess that means that we aren’t really just playing, we are challenging our brains…. Yeah, that’s right…. Sure.

Anyway, there are lots of games there that will interest you.  And, for old-timers like me that have Asteroids, Space Invaders, and Pac Man.
