Summer Listening

What’s on your iPod?  It is common for people to talk about Summer Reading — what about Summer Listening?

May I make a suggestion?  How about using this summer to listen to one of the many free Seminary classes that are available for free online?  I have listed below two sources for audio from actual seminary classes that are available for free online.  You can listen to them as streaming audio or as an Mp3 download.   If you don’t find something that interests you from the list below, check with me and I can set you up with a few more sources for similar material.

Available from BiblicalTraining.org (you have to take 30 seconds to sign up in order to gain access, but don’t worry about spam as they only send out an email 2 or 3 times a year, and usually it is just to let you know that more studies have been made available):

Robert Stein (Southern Baptist Theological Seminary)

Gerald Bray (Beeson Divinity School)

Gordon Isaac (Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary)

wow, this is an extensive list! Too bad I’m not going on any long road trips this year. I’ve found that most of my usual Podcasts have gone on summer hiatus.

(I was coming here to tell you I shamelessly lifted your “Relationship with Books” meme, but found this entry as well.).

  2. Martin Luther Fan says:

Prof David Calhoun claims to be an expert on the 2nd Great Awakening, but in his “timeline of the Church” he mentions many obscure historical figures and acknowledges the “restoration movement” of the Campbellites, yet he completely neglects even mentioning Joseph Smith and the restored Church – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Why is that? He does himself, and his “students”, a great disservice by not mentioning one of the key historical figures of that time. Regardless of whether or not he believe the Church needed to be restored (as did many Protestants of the day) or buy into the fact that God could actually call prophets in the “modern age”, that should not matter.

Enough with the frightened bias. PLEASE Teach us the true historical facts without omitting one of the central players of the day.

If the starved scholars he “teaches” want to learn about the entire 2nd Awakening, order a historical book by “Penguin Books” entitled “Joseph Smith – A Life”.

    Hi Martin Luther Fan,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts here. However, I certainly don’t follow the logic of your complaint.

Why in a course on Church History would Calhoun include a discussion of Joseph Smith and the Mormons. Joseph Smith’s teaching was antithetical to the apostolic teaching of the church and almost every fundamental belief of Christianity.

But, for those who are interested in what Calhoun did not include in his curriculum:

Joseph Smith believed that the moon was inhabited by men.

Joseph Smith believed that those having black skin had rebelled against God in a previous life and that their black skin was a sign of the curse upon them so that faithful white people would not mix with them.

Joseph Smith believed that the Egyptian God “Min” was the one true God.

Joseph Smith claimed that he did a better job of keeping the church together than did Jesus.

Joseph Smith believed that God was once a man like you and I, but through his work was able to join the gods. He and his spirit wife (or wives) gave birth to spiritual children who are born into physical bodies here on Earth. If you are good enough you can also become a god someday and rule over your own planet.

Jesus? He is the leader of the spirit children. The spiritual brother of Lucifer.

Martin Luther Fan, I think this is suitable content for a course in Alternative Religions but not for one on Church History.

What do you think?
