My Country Right Or Wrong
April 19, 2008
Our Country! In her intercourse with foreign nations, may she always be in the right; but our country, right or wrong!
~ Stephen Decatur
And say not thou “My country right or wrong”
Nor shed thy blood for an unhallowed cause.
~ John Quincy Adams, in Congress, Slavery and an Unjust War
“My country right or wrong” is like saying, “My mother, drunk or sober.”
~ G.K. Chesterton, in The Defendant

Good comments! Didn’t Luther say something like “The church may be a whore, but she’s still my mother?” That came to mind reading these, we may not always approve of our country actions, but she’s still our country…
Sage, I am unfamiliar with that quote from Luther, but you have sent me off to my books to look for it.
