A Metaphorical Rear View Mirror

July 17, 2008

Tow Mater BackwardsThere is a great line in the movie Cars, where Mater the tow truck is showing the rookie race car Lightning McQueen how to drive backwards.  McQueen is impressed and asks, “How do you do it?”  Mater responds, “I don’t have to know where I’m going I just have to know where I’ve been, I use my rear view mirrors.”

Need to know where your car has been?  Footloose teenagers, errant parking valet, disappearing delivery drivers — there are lots of reasons why you might need to know where your car has been.  And, now there is a way to find out that is both reasonably priced and easy to initiate and install.

LandAirSea Systems, Inc. sells a small, pocket sized GPS Tracking key that receives signals from the twenty-four Department of Defense GPS satellites orbiting the earth. The internal computer uses these signals to accurately determine the location of the device within 2.5 meters. When you want to check on where the GPS device has been (you might have uses for it other than your car) you simply plug the tracking key into the USB port of your computer and using Google Earth you can see where your car/device has been second by second. It is not surprising that it is currently being used by government and law enforcement agencies as well as thousands of civilians.

Watch the short video below to see a television news broadcast of how it was used to solve a murder.
